For those who need an even simpler solution which can be deployed within a single server, there’s always reverse-proxy solutions; such as squid.
This will enable a single server to serve up to 5 millions of pageviews per month, could be more with a more powerful server (eg: 8 cores, 8 GB RAM)
Not exactly the absolute top performance — but this helps greatly during the “growing pains” stage. Which is where many dotcoms are struggling with — with downtimes, there goes your visitors.

Great slide show. We’re facing with “high load issue” on our server. I hope that it will be helpful for our “growing pains”.
